GreekMythologyclaimsthatAndromedawaschainedtoarockyislandtobedevouredbyaseamonster.Herfather,thekingofEthiopia,didthistosavehisrealmfromthewrathofPoseidon.Usingthismythasinspiration,I'veplacedthefigureinaplaceofillusion,"imprisoned"fromthebeachwhereshewishesshecouldbe.Whatappearstobeabeachwithavividblueseaisinfactonlyatornposter,althoughthebottomedgemergesintoanactualshelfwithseashells.Heractualenvironmentisbaredirtgroundbywhatappearstobeapaint-pealingbuildingthathasawindowwithmetalshades.Astackofbookssitsbythe"window"overlappingontotheledge.Thesebooksrepresentanotherformofexile,alifewithinone'simaginationthatisremovedfromtruereality.Adriedrosesitsononebookandanotheristapedtoawall.Thesearesymbolsofaonceflourishingbeautythathasgoneaway,leavingonlytheiressenceandamemoryofwhattheyusedtobe.SuchwastobethefateofAndromeda.ADaVincidrawingistapedtothewall;it'sspiralingbraidsarereminiscentofasnake,oraseamonster.Aphototapednexttothedrawingshowsthesamewomanseatedonthegroundactuallymovingintothewaves.Thisisasymbolofherdesiretoreachtheoceanshedreamsof.Asatwistofirreverence,thefigureissmoking.Ididthisasawhimsicalaffronttotheidealisticimagethatthewomanportrays,andbecausemymodelforthispaintingsmoked-whynot?Finally,thebutterflyinsidethebubbleismytributetomyfriendBillyHightower,afellowartist.BillydiedfromcomplicationsduetoAIDSin1992whenthispaintingwasdone.Thebutterflyrepresentsthehumanspirit,anditsfreedomcomesonlywhenitescapesthespherewecallEarth.
