Ragnhild Nes (b. 1993) is a visual artist from Norway working primarily with the medium of painting. Through her choice of abstraction, which she translates through painting, sculpture, text and installation, she makes the world vanish into stylized fragments. Similarly, to words, her painting practice involves superimposed images that float on each other without convergence. They have been deprived of essence and objects have disappeared, but they turn into streaks, illuminated surfaces, stylized landscapes, in which colour acquires a greater expressive and chromatic force.
Ragnhild Nes
Nes has a strong understanding of how light and her given surroundings effect her artistic process, living in a country like Norway, where the quality of light shifts so drastically throughout the year. Through her gaze she sees shape and objects, driven by communicating them in compositions on the canvas, but also taking a shape and color out of the canvas and creating it into sculptural objects. Poetry is a big inspiration where she often writes down the set intention for an artwork on the blank surface, to grasp a glimpse of time that is then recreated in color and form. A line or a brushstroke communicates what she wishes to say. «I don’t paint what I see, but what I saw», Edvard Munch. Nes finds great inspiration from Munch’s art and the way he created a painting. Among other, by how the surroundings become a physical part of his artworks, by painting them outside. Nes artistic practice blurs the lines between memories, art historical references and present time. In 2022 she had her first solo show in Italy, at SARP Gallery, in 2024 she was part of exhibitions in Denmark, Portugal and a solo show at Kösk Gallery in Norway. She made the 30 under 30 list in the magazine Subjekt, 2023 and has received great demand for her work in Norway.
